Why Leeds’ away kit has a different badge as Whites return to ‘smiley’ emblem

Why does Leeds’ away kit have a different badge? Whites return to ‘smiley’ emblem on yellow shirt

The supporters are adoring Leeds United’s new yellow away uniform, which will be unveiled this weekend against West Brom.

After their 2018 scandal, the Whites are no strangers to dramatic badge changes, but the 2024–25 yellow strip has drawn greater praise.

On a first day of sales that broke records, the Yorkshire club reported that over 15,000 of the new shirts were sold.

With a “smiley” emblem that harks back to the 1970s, the Elland Road outfit has had 13 different crests in its 104-year history.

Why does Leeds’ away kit have a different badge?

Adidas, the team’s sponsors, has introduced a throwback motif, which has worked well in the past with other customers like Arsenal and Manchester United.

Leeds’ head of digital, marketing, and retail, Aaron Duckmanton, stated: “Both the colour yellow and the smiley crest are iconic parts of the club’s history and we hope fans will enjoy wearing this modern interpretation with pride throughout this season.” Fifty years ago, the fallen Premier League giants were not only among the best teams in Europe, but they were also trailblazers in marketing. The 24/25 yellow-away jersey was inspired by Leed’s famous 1974 shirt.

With Admiral as a prior sponsor, then-manager Don Revie helped pioneer the sale of replica shirts to fans.

The new look for the kit and badge was part of an attempt to distance Leeds from the grim events of the early 1970s.

The LUFC lettering design was destroyed in favour of a yellow L and U, with the former letter rotated to resemble a smile.

Leeds won the crest and went on to win the English championship under Revie in 1973–74. The next year, they finished second in the European Cup.

The 1974 kit remained a cult favourite with the badge not being replaced until the peacock design of 1980

Leeds fans hated the centenary badge which was unveiled by the club in 2018 - and it was soon canned
