Cambridge v Rotherham United: Millers boss Steve Evans and fellow ex-Leeds United manager Garry Monk aim to end barren streaks

Cambridge v Rotherham United: Millers boss Steve Evans and fellow ex-Leeds United manager Garry Monk aim to end barren streaks

“Close, but no cigar” has been the characterisation of Rotherham United’s away performance thus far in 2024–25.

After his team’s Saturday failure to win three points against an early-season underdog in Shrewsbury Town, Steve Evans’s displeasure was evident.

In the event that the Millers fall short of defeating cellar-dwelling Cambridge United on Tuesday night and ending their historic quest for a win, it will be greatly exacerbated.

Cambridge is plagued by a sequence that they are keen to break, just like its rivals.

The U’s are without a win in their last 16 games, taking into account the latter part of the previous season. Former Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, and Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk is under fire.

To find out when Monk’s team last received a win bonus in a league or cup, you had to go back exactly six months, to April 1.

The wait for an away victory is even longer for Rotherham. On November 8, 2022, try it. 44 games in the past, participating in cup events.

Evans stated: “I had a chat with our chairman and directors before the (Shrewsbury) game – they were here – and I said to them: ‘It isn’t this group that’s gone 40 league games in two years.'” Evans has set a minimum four-point total for back-to-back games against Shrewsbury and Cambridge.

“One or two players, perhaps. We have shared a tight relationship. We ought to have done it at Charlton because we were so close.

We ought to have succeeded at Shrewsbury because we were so near. Now, we need to attempt success in Cambridge and Peterborough.

“People forget that this is a really tough spell for us: four away games out of six in the league.”

Cameron Dawson was brought in for Evans on Saturday in an attempt to change things up in goal.

The former Owls caretaker didn’t really achieve anything in Shropshire, in the end.

“After seven games, it was time to freshen it up,” Evans continued. To be honest, he hasn’t done anything. It was a practice of catching.

Here, there are two top choices. Cam has to wait patiently.

“I don’t really care if Dillon (Phillips) has to sit and be patient. To be honest, I choose the team.
