Wayne Rooney had an emotional rollercoaster on Saturday. He was dismissed as Plymouth Argyle’s manager in the 97th minute, and his team went on to defeat Blackburn Rovers in the 97th.
In the midst of the thrilling 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers for Plymouth Argyle, a furious Wayne Rooney was sent off.
Having assumed leadership in June, Rooney, 38, currently oversees Championship side Plymouth. After a thrilling conclusion against Blackburn, Argyle has now won three of their past five league games. The Manchester United legend’s reign had a terrible start.
The former England captain was sent to the stands for the thrilling final moments of the Championship match after referee James Linington judged that he had overstepped the mark. Rooney unwillingly went under the tunnel at Home Park, but he would return to the pitch to celebrate a little more than ten minutes later.
Morgan Whittaker, a winger for Plymouth, scored deep into injury time to steal all three points for Argyle and propel them up to 14th place in the standings. Rooney went back to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates and staff following the final whistle.
After being fired by Birmingham City in January after just 15 games in charge, the 38-year-old is putting a lot of effort into rebuilding his managerial reputation. After quitting his first club, Derby County, in 2022, Rooney went on to manage DC United in the USA.
To lift the spirits in Devon, Plymouth has won all of its league games at home, defeating demoted Luton Town, high-flying Sunderland, and now Blackburn. The ultimate goal of Rooney is to manage either United or Everton, the club he grew up playing for. “To become a manager at Manchester United or Everton is the goal; these are the big jobs you want to be in,” Rooney stated earlier this year to BBC Sport.
“But it’s a process; I need to follow the instructions and get myself back on course. To ensure that, hopefully, within the next ten years, I’m in a position to move into one of the larger posts, I want to get back into management.
