“Unfortunately” – Plymouth Argyle, Aston Villa transfer questioned (Fan view)

“Unfortunately” – Plymouth Argyle, Aston Villa transfer questioned

The ‘Terrace Talk’ series from Football League World features the views of our FLW Fan Pundits on a variety of topics, including teams, players, managers, potential signings, breaking news, and more.

In recent seasons, Plymouth Argyle has enjoyed some success in the transfer window, as the Greens have discovered some gems in the process of moving up from League One to the Championship.

Despite the success of players such as Morgan Whittaker, Bali Mumba, and Finn Azaz, the Pilgrims have also had a few unsatisfactory trades over that time, with players failing to live up to expectations after moving to Home Park.

Despite joining from Aston Villa in the 22–23 season, Tyreik Wright, a fast wide player, clearly belongs in the later of the two groups. However, he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter for a team that was trying to advance.

Football League World’s Argyle fan analyst Chris identified the Republic of Ireland youth international as the player in recent memory who has fallen short of the high expectations placed on him upon joining the Devon team. The player in question was expected to do better, however he fell short of those expectations.

Following his impressive performance for Bradford City in League Two in the first part of the 22–23 season, Argyle acted quickly to sign Wright in January of that year, hoping to bolster their forward line in the hopes of advancing further.

Following his debut in a 1-1 tie at Portman Road against Suffolk Town, the winger appeared to be deceptive as time went on. Steven Schumacher soon concluded the forward wasn’t good enough for a team vying for promotion, and the forward saw very few games.

Returning to the team is something that two previous Plymouth Argyle managers are considering.

Once the previous campaign began, the wide man had a summer under his belt and was given the opportunity to establish himself in the Championship. However, he once again appeared to be lacking confidence and was making mistakes.

Wright made just a few appearances for the Argyles during his tenure; Chris remembers that they should be kept quiet. He returned to Valley Parade in January before deciding to make the move permanent in the summer.

“As with any football club, sometimes transfer signings just do not work out, either they under-perform, they

either don’t fit in with the team or are unable to adjust to the management style.

Tyreik Wright, who we bought from Aston Villa in January 2023 for an undisclosed fee, is one specific example of this for Argyle in recent years.

“He demonstrated great promise in League Two, showcasing his versatility as a winger with ample speed, potential, and the ability to enter the box and contribute.

He only made eleven appearances for us, the most of which were as late substitutions, regrettably during his time with Plymouth Argyle.

He didn’t offer that much flair, that much dexterity in his passing, or that much versatility in playing more subdued roles.

Sadly, this resulted in his being loaned back to Bradford City for the second part of the 2023–2024 campaign, and at the beginning of the 24–25 season, he signed a permanent contract once more.

“We had the best of intentions for Tyreik Wright during his tenure with us, but things didn’t work out.”

Tyreik Wright and Bradford City continue to bring the best out of each other

Since leaving Home Park, Wright has appeared to have found a home with the Bantams and is still a threat to many League Two teams.

Although he gave off the impression of a disgruntled and restless player during his performances in Devon, the 23-year-old appeared at ease in his familiar surroundings of Yorkshire, where he was regularly included in Graham Alexander’s starting lineup.

While the move up the football pyramid may have come too soon in his career, the former Villa player may have a significant role to play in his current side’s predicament going forward. Even in his brief time as a Pilgrim, there were flashes of quality that will get more of a chance to shine at League Two level.
