It’s interesting to note that despite all of the publicity, accolades, and success, he has also gone through a trying time, from what I can tell. He has been working out in a first-team setting and is viewed as a training player, something I have also experienced. That may be rather deflating.

“You’ve been given an opportunity, as we saw towards the end of last season, so I’ve spoken to him a lot about keeping involved, being passionate, doing exactly what he’s done to get these opportunities, because maybe he hasn’t got on or had the game time he has done previously.

“That’s contributed to with what’s happened with the difficulties under the previous manager at Cardiff (Bulut) and the strain and stress that causes. Opportunities for young players become few and far between then. Because you need faith and trust in young players and it’s hard for them then. Players will never get there without the opportunities. “I’ve had wonderful conversations with Cian. I think he might mature in terms of understanding that and the current situation he’s in. “But let’s go back to the positives. He is super, super talented and a wonderful kid. And he’s one I’m sure whose career will be very healthy moving forward for Cardiff and Wales.”

Although Riza, the Bluebirds’ interim manager, is aware of the potential of the Rondda product, he acknowledges that it can be difficult to decide when to give his young, talented players more playing time.

“Coming from a youth development background, I have worked around young players for a long time in my coaching career, and recognising when people need that chat or to be able to come to you and know you’re there is important,” Riza responded when questioned about Ashford.

“I believe there are coaches here who are aware of that as well. After speaking with Ash, I’ve noticed that, despite appearances, he occasionally seems unhappy. He puts up a lot of effort and is clear about his goals.

He should have plenty of opportunities to play minutes this season. We need tempo and direction since he is a quick player. My constant concern is how to get Ash onto the pitch at the appropriate moment.

The timing of everything is crucial, particularly during these unstable times in games. Whether we need to close down or exercise a little more self-control in our actions, the moment may not be appropriate.
