“Missed opportunity” – Plymouth Argyle touted to re-ignite transfer interest in 15-goal attacker

“Missed opportunity” – Plymouth Argyle touted to re-ignite transfer interest in 15-goal attacker

Part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, this piece offers our FLW Fan Pundits their personal thoughts on the newest breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible additions, and more.

In anticipation of the January transfer window, Plymouth Argyle will be looking to add players who can help them avoid Championship relegation.

Michael Baidoo, who stayed with Swedish team Elfsborg, was one player that Argyle was frequently connected to during the summer transfer window.

Wayne Rooney’s team is being urged to look into a move for the Ghanaian again in January due to his attacking midfielder’s performance for his club. Since his current club won’t begin its 2025 season until early April, they might be more open to a deal.

Michael Baidoo has been sensational for Elfsborg this season

Given his excellent play in Sweden, it is not surprising that Baidoo has attracted interest in England.

With a total of 15 goals and seven assists in all competitions, the 25-year-old has excelled both at home and in Europe. This season, he has mostly been playing as a striker rather than his more natural advanced midfield position.

When Baidoo captained his team and scored the game-winning goal against AS Roma in early October, it was one of the most memorable moments of his career.

Given that this season has been the most productive of Baidoo’s career and that his outstanding output demonstrates the influence he is having on the pitch, it is simply a question of time.

Although they will probably face fierce competition for Baidoo’s signature, Portsmouth could rekindle their interest in the 25-year-old in January by making a club-record bid.

The Ghanaian should once again be on FLW’s radar when the January transfer window opens at the beginning of 2025, Chris, a fan commentator for FLW, stated when asked if there was a player his team was linked to that he wishes they had bought.

“One of the names who was very heavily linked with Argyle was Michael Baidoo, the Ghanaian attacking-midfielder currently playing for Elfsborg,” Chris stated to Football League World.

But regrettably, no agreement was reached, and given the performances he was giving, it appeared to be a hugely lost chance.

“Hopefully, we can resume this during the January transfer window, and Michael Baidoo, as he stated at the time, would be eager to join Argyle.

“Whether that be on a loan deal or maybe a possible permanent deal, we’ll have to wait and see.”

“A lot of business is required” is the January transfer caution that Plymouth Argyle issued.

Ahead of the January transfer window, a Plymouth Argyle supporter on FLW has expressed one significant worry for the team.

The European market has proved fruitful for Plymouth and Wayne Rooney
    Ibrahim Cissoko

The Pilgrims will probably target the European market once more in the January window after making effective use of it throughout the summer.

Kornél Szűcs and Ibrahim Cissoko, who came from Kecskeméti TE and Tolouse, respectively, have been popular at Home Park this season.

Chris talked about how fans responded to these deals during the summer before citing a specific success story.

“The summer transfer window raised many eyebrows with certain players that were brought in from various different leagues around the world,” Chris said.

“Many Argyle supporters were also concerned since there were a number of names that no one had ever heard of at the Championship level.

“However, some of those names have proved critics wrong, such as Kornél Szűcs, our Hungarian centre-back.”

The market not only enables the club to sign undiscovered talent, but it also makes agreements possible at a low cost.

Michael Baidoo’s 2024 Allsvenskan (Swedish top tier) statistics – per SofaScore
    Appearances 27
    Goals 10
    Assists 4
    Goal conversion 25%
Accurate passes per game 23.0 (83%)
    Touches 39.6

In order to prevent relegation to League One, Plymouth and Rooney will need to put in some effort in January.

The team is in dire need of attacking flair with Cissoko sidelined due to injury, and Baidoo might be the ideal answer for the Pilgrims.

But there will probably be a lot of competition for the attacking midfield player, and Plymouth would be well-served to sign him considering their present league position.
