“Important for us” – Wayne Rooney weighs in on Plymouth Argyle documentary debate

“Important for us” – Wayne Rooney weighs in on Plymouth Argyle documentary debate

The manager of Plymouth Argyle, Wayne Rooney, said that the team would benefit financially from a planned documentary at Home Park.

It was recently announced that the England great would be filmed while he oversees the Championship team, which is fighting to stay in the second division.

    Championship Table (as of 20/11/24)
    Team P GD Pts
    18 Plymouth Argyle 15 -11 16
    19 Hull City 15 -4 15
    20 Preston North End 15 -8 15
    21 Luton Town 15 -9 15
    22 Cardiff City 15 -9 15
    23 Portsmouth 15 -12 12
    24 QPR 15 -13 10

Naturally, fly-on-the-wall documentaries have been shot at teams like Sunderland, Tottenham, and Wrexham, among others, so this is nothing new in the modern game.

Wayne Rooney discusses Plymouth Argyle documentary dilemma

Unsurprisingly, there was a mixed response to the release of this documentary. Some people were excited to learn more about what goes on at Plymouth.

Others questioned whether the club should be doing it, especially because it might cause disruptions for the players. Former Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman said that during filming the Black Cats’ Netflix documentary, it seemed like he was on “Big Brother.”

But in an interview with Plymouth Live, Rooney outlined the club’s reasoning for choosing this course of action while also outlining how it will help Argyle.

Rooney stated, “It must be at the appropriate times.”

Access will not be available for anything that we believe could have an impact on players on matchday. I don’t think it’s any different for the players or a surprise to have cameras around, because most teams have their own internal cameras nearly everywhere these days. It won’t be a problem until they adjust to that.

“I think that the audience’ increased comprehension is incredibly fascinating.

“Of course, the spectators watch the players take the pitch and compete in games, but what they really watch is the preparation that takes place the week before the game, the effort the players put in, and how much they care—and how much we all care to see results.

“They are not present at all times of the day. We will assign them specific days to shoot. Neither the staff nor the players will have to cope with a significant change.

“I believe the club will benefit from it. We will have to wait and see where that goes, but I am aware that major brands are considering taking it.

In addition to the fact that it will undoubtedly benefit the club financially, which is crucial given where we are, I believe that as a club supporter, I would be quite interested in watching.

“Obviously, you have to consider everything, and we thought the positives outweighed the negatives by a wide margin.”

Wayne Rooney will keep Plymouth Argyle focused on football

According to Rooney, this is nothing new for players in contemporary football, and the former Man United star is undoubtedly familiar with being filmed because he established himself in the professional ranks.

Therefore, even though it might take some players some time to get used to it, Rooney won’t allow it to divert them.

It seems obvious that the club is attempting to capitalise on the fact that having someone with Rooney’s level of reputation in the game was always going to increase Portsmouth’s profile.

Wayne Rooney confirms a significant boost for Plymouth Argyle before of their match against Watford.

Following a thigh injury last month, the defender has missed the last four games.

However, as is typically the case, what happens on the field is what matters most, therefore Rooney and the club will be anxious to avoid making this a talking point by winning games to move up the Championship standings.

Plymouth’s next game is against Watford on Friday night.
