“I don’t think it is ever going to haunt Spurs” – Cardiff City, Ollie Tanner claim made after Tottenham transfer miss

“I don’t think it is ever going to haunt Spurs” – Cardiff City, Ollie Tanner claim made after Tottenham transfer miss

Part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, this piece offers our FLW Fan Pundits their personal thoughts on the newest breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible signings, and more.

Since Omer Riza took over as interim manager in September after Erol Bulut was fired, Cardiff City has made great strides, and winger Ollie Tanner’s contributions have been essential to their recent success.

Tanner joined Cardiff from non-league team Lewes in the summer of 2022, and he made a name for himself in the first squad last season following a loan stint with York City of the National League.

When he scored the first goal in his team’s 2-0 victory over local rivals Swansea City at home last September, the 22-year-old made the ideal first impression on the Bluebirds supporters. However, it’s safe to say he found it difficult to build on that memorable performance.

    1-3

Tanner started this season mostly as a substitute under Bulut, but under Riza, he has started every game save one. On Saturday, he scored his second goal of the season in the 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, tying his goal total from the entire previous season.

Ollie Tanner’s stats for Cardiff City (according to Transfermarkt)
    Season Appearances Goals Assists
    2022-23 2 0 0
    2023-24 40 2 1
    2024-25 17 2 2

The winger is one of Cardiff’s most promising prospects right now, but things may have turned out quite differently if he had signed a contract with Tottenham Hotspur six months prior to moving to South Wales.

During Tanner’s tenure at Lewes, Tottenham reached an agreement to sign him in January 2022; however, the transfer fell through because Tanner was unable to reach a personal agreement with the Premier League team.

When asked if he thinks Tottenham will regret not signing Tanner, Jack Price, a Cardiff City supporter on FLW, acknowledged that they probably won’t be too upset about losing out on the winger. He also questioned if Tanner will ever be talented enough to play for a major Premier League team.

Jack remarked, “That’s an interesting one,”

“originally of all, I think Tanner is demonstrating his potential at Cardiff, and I was thrilled when we originally signed him from Lewes. I am a huge fan of Tanner.

It’s clearly not a slight on Tanner, but I’m not sure where his football ceiling is and I don’t think he will ever be a top four Premier League player. If that were possible, he wouldn’t be at Cardiff at the moment.

I don’t believe it will come back to haunt Spurs because, like many of these elite teams, I believe they would have signed him with the intention of loaning him out, having him make an impression but probably never playing for the first team, and then selling him for a profit.

They won’t regret it, in my opinion.

“I believe he can play in the Premier League, ideally with Cardiff, at his age if he maintains his current level of play and improves it even more.

“To be honest, I don’t think it will ever come back to haunt Spurs, but he is playing well and we have a quality player on our hands.

“I’m glad he’s receiving more opportunities this season, top player.”

Jack is correct that Tottenham is unlikely to be upset that they did not finalise a deal for Tanner because he has not performed well in the Championship since joining Cardiff.

Tanner’s choice to decline a move to Spurs was audacious, and with Antonio Conte in charge at the time, his playing time would have undoubtedly been severely restricted under the Italian.

Tanner may now regret not joining the North London club, though, as current Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou is much more ready to give young players a chance and recruited fascinating talents like Archie Grey, Wilson Odobert, and Lucas Bergvall this summer.

After a disappointing season, Tanner is quickly establishing himself as a valuable member of the Bluebirds team under Riza. If he can keep improving over the next few months, top flight clubs might soon be requesting him once more.
