Every word Paul Heckingbottom said on Preston North End huddle, Freddie Woodman, ‘expansive’ Cardiff City

Every word Paul Heckingbottom said on Preston North End huddle, Freddie Woodman, ‘expansive’ Cardiff City

The PNE manager has a lot to process before Wednesday night’s game against Cardiff City.

Paul Heckingbottom, the manager of Preston North End, spoke about a variety of subjects during his pre-Cardiff City press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Was Freddie Woodman coming back into the team quite routine, or did Dai Cornell give you a decision to make?

“I was quite happy with Dai,” Heckingbottom remarked. But, listen, it’s never easy, and Freddie’s return was no exception. Now that everyone is well and fit, it should be challenging. It should be awkward, and I should be talking to players about it without really having any clear explanations—just gut instinct.

Even while a player may not want to hear that, in the end, it is a better reflection on them than telling them they aren’t on the team because of X, Y, or Z, or that they are doing something incorrectly. In addition to making it challenging to choose the starting lineup, you want every player to make it challenging when you’re lagging behind and making substitutions. You don’t appear to have nearly as much armour.

Did you like how the team looked in Sheffield Wednesday’s half? It looked like – particularly Sam Greenwood and Mads Frokjaer – a lot of good quality players, enjoying playing together.

Heckingbottom remarked, “You look back at the team and watch the performance,” acknowledging that while players occasionally have messy moments, everyone performed admirably. “However, having a successful team involves more than just playing well if you want to be at the top. For instance, Sheffield Wednesday has four points and finished second in their last two games, as I mentioned to them after we spoke. That alone is a skill.

Stuart McCall gave us a flavour of your post-match huddle. Was it a spur of the moment thing where you needed to have a word with the players right there?

Heckingbottom remarked, “I just liked the performance and the way we played.” “I didn’t want the guys to know how frustrated I was. You understand what I mean? I simply didn’t. The entire concert was enjoyable to me. Although we are always pursuing, it was courageous and constructive. I am aware that we will continue to make mistakes. We were leading, they tied the score, and we continued to lead, creating problems. And yes, pay attention, we should have won the game. It was really, really fantastic in terms of performance and what I want to see from the team.”

What type of team are Cardiff?

“They try and be expansive with the ball,” Heckingbottom stated. “They attempt to cause you trouble with the ball before forming a 4-4-2 formation without it. So, yes, you can fall into the trap of obsessively pursuing it and becoming anxious if the game becomes chaotic and jumbled. However, their attempts with the ball encourage that. In any case, I prefer us when the game gets that way. The game ought to be enjoyable.
