Leeds United confirm signing of Manchester City left-back

Leeds United has jumped at the chance to sign Jayden Lienou, while Manchester City has approved the permanent departure of one of their up-and-coming Academy stars.

Every year, City’s Academy and Elite Development Squad produce highly regarded players, but due to intense competition for spots, the best players frequently leave to pursue senior opportunities.

Following Celtic’s 2-0 preseason victory over Sporting, Rodgers was pleased.

The club’s summer activities thus far have mirrored this continuing reality, with several long-term departures expected for both young and seasoned players who have performed well but have found a better chance to play for the first team elsewhere.

A versatile and forward-thinking left-back, Jayden Lienou has been a notable member of Manchester City’s Under-18 team, playing frequently throughout recent successful campaigns and making a name for himself as a Wales youth international.

James McAtee is anticipated to pursue new chances outside of the Etihad Stadium as part of a larger trend at Manchester City this summer, which coincides with his departure. Lienou fits the description of Leeds, who have a renewed emphasis on recruiting young players with long-term potential since returning to the Premier League.

Leeds United has declared that they have signed Jayden Lienou, a 17-year-old, to a three-year contract at Elland Road that will last until the summer of 2028. Leeds United is the freshly promoted English top-flight team.

Leeds United is happy to announce the signing of Jayden Lienou, who joins the club’s Academy from Manchester City, according to a statement from the Yorkshire team.

The 17-year-old left-back has signed a three-year contract with the Whites, tying him down until 2028 as he now pursues his growth at Thorp Arch.

Lienou, a mainstay in City’s squad that won the U18 Premier League North the previous season, has also played youth rugby for Wales.

“We are all excited to see Jayden’s growth at Thorp Arch and would like to welcome him to Leeds United.”

Ahead of official confirmation, market source Fabrizio Romano had previously stated that Leeds’ Under-21 employees Adam Underwood and Andrew Taylor would be “key” to the move, and that the transfer would occur for a package valued at less than £500,000.

The move shows how well-regarded Manchester City’s Academy system is, even though it might not garner as much notice as high-profile first-team transfers.

Since Leeds is renowned for its drive to develop young players into Daniel Farke’s starting lineup, Lienou’s selection implies the team sees him as a long-term player rather than merely a depth option for the academy.

Should Lienou develop into a top-tier left-back over the coming years, City believes there is a good chance the deal will include standard sell-on protections or matching rights. His progress will be keenly monitored, as the demand for domestic defensive skill keeps increasing.
