Referee pundit gives verdict on Stoke City penalty and red card claim vs Millwall

Dermot Gallagher has a good guess at what the referee coach will have said to Will Finnie after Stoke City’s draw with Millwall

After missing a clear penalty and receiving a red card in Stoke City’s draw with Millwall, Dermot Gallagher is certain that referee Will Finnie will have been instructed to correct his positioning.

At the bet365 Stadium on Saturday, as the Potters were searching for an equaliser early in the second half, Wanderer Burger was dragged back by Jake Cooper inside the six-yard box, shocking Stoke players and spectators and the Millwall camp, which acknowledged they had gotten away with one. After complaining, Burger received a dissenting booking and will miss Stoke’s upcoming away game against Queens Park Rangers. Nevertheless, Stoke managed to tie the score at one through a goal from Ben Gibson.

Former Premier League referee Gallagher reviewed the incident in Sky Sports’ weekly Ref Watch feature and said: “If I can explain something here, it’s a penalty and red card for me. He makes no attempt to play the ball and grabs at him. He’d have had a clear shot at goal; penalty and red card.   “What I would say in defence of the referee is that he’s a development referee. “I can say that when referees make correct decisions, it’s usually because they have put in a lot of effort to achieve that opinion. The coach must have instructed this boy that he couldn’t stand motionless for whatever reason. You must have mobility. You have to allow yourself the chance. That is the reason for the error.

Wouter Burger is pulled back by Jake Cooper as Stoke City take on Millwall in the Championship. No penalty was awarded.

“When referees make correct calls, I can say that it’s usually because they put in a lot of effort to get that opinion. For whatever reason, this boy stood still, and the coach would have told him it was not possible. You must be able to move. It is imperative that you allow yourself the chance. The error was made for that reason.
