Ex-Southampton star delivers his Leeds United verdict with Saints ‘having Whites number’ view
Former Southampton player Francis Benali gave his assessment on Leeds United, praising the Whites but adding more “belief” for the Saints in the play-off final.
Benali, a former full-back for Southampton, played 369 games for the team between 1988 and 2003. On Friday night at St Mary’s, the former defender watched as Russell Martin’s team secured a spot in the play-off final against Leeds.
With a 3-1 victory over West Brom on Friday night in the semi-final second leg, Southampton secured their trip to Wembley for a rematch with Daniel Farke’s Whites, whom they had defeated both at home and away during the regular season, notably on the penultimate day of play at Elland Road. Despite the “outstanding” praise from Whites, Benali claims that this will give Southampton more confidence and a psychological boost that a third victory against Leeds may secure a return to the Premier League.
I believe coming into something like a final as much as it is a one-off game, but I go back to this season’s final game and having that little psychological aspect of it just really gives you that little bit of belief. However, it’s fantastic to see two powerful teams go to the championship game after placing third and fourth in the table.”

In response to a question about whether the recent victory at Elland Road will have any psychological effects, Benali said, “Definitely.” At Elland Road this season, Leeds United has been fantastic. Not many teams have visited and prevailed there. After a minor setback near the conclusion of the season, it is fantastic that Southampton accomplished that on the final day of play.
Benali continued, saying, “It goes without saying that I will support my team 100 percent.” I will support the lads even if it will be difficult.
