‘Unfair’ – Ex-Leeds United ace issues Joel Piroe verdict in suggested team v Southampton call

‘Unfair’ – Ex-Leeds United ace issues Joel Piroe verdict in suggested team v Southampton call

A former Leeds United player has named a possible starting lineup for the Whites against Southampton in Sunday’s Championship play-off final, offering his Joel Piroe assessment.

Archie Grey entered the game to play a more advanced midfield role behind Georginio Rutter forward in the play-offs semi-final first leg against Norwich City, replacing Dutch attacker Piroe in the starting lineup. Four days before the second leg at Elland Road, a compact Leeds team that essentially had a new look three-man midfield exited with a goalless draw.

Before the second leg began, Whites manager Daniel Farke was handed a blow with a hip flexor injury to full-back Sam Byram, forcing Farke to move Grey back to right back. Piroe joined Rutter in the front line and took Byram’s place as the only member of the team to change as part of another team shape change.

Leeds was ahead 3-0 after forty minutes, and Piroe, Ilia Gruev, and Georginio Rutter all scored as part of an incredible 4-0 triumph that guaranteed United’s spot in Sunday’s play-off final.

Due to a knee injury, Patrick Bamford, Farke’s primary choice at number nine, has been sidelined recently. Bamford has stated that in order to have a realistic chance of playing at Wembley, he needs to train by Wednesday. But after his performance against the Canaries, former Leeds midfielder David Prutton believes that Piroe should start in Sunday’s championship game.

Prutton stated to the YEP: “I would leave it as is because of the way that they approached the game, but it’s only one game, and I think maybe they need to get their heads around that a bit more because it’s got to be the best team to face that particular task of beating Southampton. Even though you look at what Patrick brings to the side and has done on quite a regular basis, to be that emphatic in that game and then completely change it up, I think it would be slightly unfair on Joel.

“It was more about their approach and how they approached it with that kind of determination. Although there are very small differences between a Patrick and a Joel leading the line, I believe that you should leave it as it is because of how excellent he was and the results he produced in Georgi and the players surrounding him.
