Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney nominated for manager of the month award
In September, the Pilgrims’ manager guided his team to thrilling victories in the Championship against Sunderland and Luton Town.
Wayne Rooney is nominated for the September Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award in recognition of his work as head coach of Plymouth Argyle.
Rooney, Blackburn Rovers’ John Eustace, Burnley manager Scott Parker, and Chris Wilder of Sheffield United are on the shortlist for the award. Argyle had only two points from their opening four league games of the year, but they had a much better month of September.
First, they defeated Sunderland 3-2 in a thrilling match at Home Park, snapping their perfect record. Captain Joe Edwards scored the game-winning goal in the third minute of extra time.
They subsequently went up against the top-of-the-table West Bromwich Albion and lost 1-0 at The Hawthorns. Later, they won a home game against Luton Town, one of the three Premier League teams demoted, 3-1, which was aired by Sky.
After leading Sheffield United to 10 points from four games, Wilder is the clear favourite to win manager of the month. Nevertheless, Rooney’s nomination is a testament to the job he has been doing at Argyle during a very challenging start to the season.
The September nominations for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month Award are:
John Eustace (Blackburn Rovers)
Eustace’s focus on the squad spirit allowed his Rovers team to deal with injuries with ease. Three straight clean sheets served as the cornerstone for defensive stability, which allowed the team to win three out of three games and record another unbeaten month.
Scott Parker (Burnley)
Half of Parker’s team left Turf Moor in late August, marking the beginning of his tenure. After making some clever transfer purchases, he spent September building a new squad and managed to secure seven points from three wins.
Wayne Rooney (Argyle)
With his team’s 4-3-3 front foot style, Rooney is winning over the Plymouth supporters after a challenging start at Argyle. Three goals in two out of three games came against Sunderland, the leaders, and Luton, the most recent relegated team.
Chris Wilder (Sheffield United)
Wilder has completely erased the post-relegation gloom surrounding Bramall Lane by assembling a fresh team and positioning them as prospects for promotion. Ten points and a clean sheet were earned in each of the four games that went undefeated.
On October 11, tomorrow, the winner will be declared. Don Goodman of Sky Sports, Ivor Davies of Sky Bet EFL trading, and Danny Wilson, the former manager of Barnsley, make up the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.
