Nottingham Forest defender and more: 3 stars out of contract in 2025 who Cardiff City should target in January

Eight new players joined Cardiff City’s roster this season as a result of a reasonably active summer transfer window.

After nine games in the Championship, Cardiff City is currently at the bottom of the standings, having had a very dismal start to the season.

Although Erol Bulut was stripped of his managing duties due to the Bluebirds’ early performances, the team made several fairly wise additions before the window closed.

The group that entered the Cardiff City Stadium included seasoned former Aston Villa players Callum Chambers and Anwar El Ghazi, but if they want to stay in the playoffs this season, further signings may be needed.

Here, we offer three players whose contracts expire in the summer who Cardiff City ought to have

    Harry Toffolo

The 29-year-old left-back Toffolo is no longer a regular for Nottingham Forest, so the Bluebirds would do well to check on his availability.

The defender joined the East Midlands team after they were promoted to the Premier League in 2022. In 51 games across all competitions, he has one goal and four assists to his name.

Previously a fierce rival in the Championship for Huddersfield Town, the former England U20 international has only made one appearance for the Reds so far this season and would be inclined to move down a tier to gain more playing time.

    Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu

Mpanzu, who is renowned for becoming the first player to appear in all five of England’s divisions with the same team, is another player who may have the desire for increased playing time.

The Hatters, like Cardiff City, will be unhappy with how the season has started and might be willing to move a few players in January. Just four times this season has the 30-year-old international from the Democratic Republic of the Congo appeared, all as a substitute.

The Welsh team should think about making an approach, even though it might be difficult to entice Mpanzu away from Kenilworth Road after a ten-year commitment. The Bluebirds could use some more bite in midfield.

    Kwame Poku

For our last recommendation, we’ll drop into the third tier. Poku of Peterborough United has had an incredible start to the season, tallying six goals and two assists in the third tier thus far.

The 23-year-old Ghanaian international has played 127 games for Peterborough United since joining the team in 2021. The youthful player, who has contributed 24 goals and 25 assists overall since joining the Posh, is a continual threat moving forward.

Poku might offer the Bluebirds a great long-term attacking option out wide as he enters a time in his career where he will undoubtedly be eager to try himself at a higher level. El Ghazi and Ollie Tanner aren’t doing much right now to help the right flank, hence the winger is
