Championship star forced to take £500 taxi to match after frustrating 15,620-mile round trip

Championship star forced to take £500 taxi to match after frustrating 15,620-mile round trip

After landing back at Heathrow early on Thursday morning, Watford boss Tom Cleverley sent Francisco Sierralta straight to his club’s overnight base in Devon to rest ahead of the clash with Plymouth

Francisco Sierralta, a defender for Watford, travelled to Plymouth on tax.

Francisco Sierralta, a defender for Watford, made the 15,620-mile round trip without playing a minute during the international break and is now travelling to Plymouth by taxi.

In the South American World Cup qualification group, the Hornets’ Chilean centre-back did not play in the 0-0 draw with Peru in Lima or the 4-2 victory over Venezuela.

Additionally, Watford manager Tom Cleverley sent Sierralta directly to his team’s overnight base in Devon to recuperate before Friday night’s Championship matchup with Plymouth after the player returned to Heathrow early on Thursday morning.

The Hornets will have to pay about £500 for the 230-mile journey, but Cleverley maintains that it was a better option than calling the 6′ 3″ monster back to the training area for a quick debriefing. With no qualms, Sierralta flew from London to Lima to Santiago and back to Britain in support of Chile.

Cleverley also thinks that after his sting in the tail—all the 50 mph limits on the M4 and M5—he will be prepared to take on Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims at Home Park.

“I’ve never seen a situation in my career where you have a player who is going straight to the team hotel without a training session,” the Watford head coach stated.

He will take a taxi directly to Plymouth after landing at Heathrow this morning, and we’re sending a physiotherapist there to help him recover from the trip.

It will be odd to see him for the first time when I get in Plymouth. We’re handling everything to give him the best chance of being in the best condition since he’s a key player for us.

Sierralta was recently on international duty with Chile

Sierralta just been abroad with Chile.

Sixth in the Championship, Watford was predicted to be relegated in the preseason but has been the season’s surprise package after a worrying drop under Cleverley’s predecessor, Valerien Ismael, made them a questionable package.

However, the Hornets have only triumphed twice away from home: once at Millwall on the first day and once at Sheffield Wednesday in a six-goal blitz in which Vakoun Bayo scored four goals alone.

In a 4-0 victory over Chad in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Bayo scored his first goal for Ivory Coast, capping off a successful month.
