‘It is understood…’ – Mike McGrath shares when Elland Road works will begin at Leeds

Elland Road expansion work start date emerges at Leeds United in new update

Leeds United will begin its extension work on Elland Road after they achieve promotion back to the Premier League, according to Mike McGrath.

According to the journalist’s story via The Telegraph on October 3, if Daniel Farke can lead the team to the top division of English football this season, the Whites would start building Elland Road’s capacity up to 15,355.

Leeds, who were three points behind league leaders Sunderland after eight games of the 2024–25 season, are now in fifth place and will be keen to make amends for their disappointment in losing out on promotion the previous year.

“It is understood that the work on the expansion will begin if they get out of the Championship and back into the big time,” McGrath wrote.

Leeds’ last match, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, against Plymouth Argyle, has a lot of potential for both the stadium and those at Elland Road. Of course, if Farke leads his team to the top of the Championship table, promotion could be theirs long before the league ends, but if Leeds end up in the play-offs again, fans may have to wait a bit longer. Following the heartbreaking play-off final loss to Southampton at Wembley last season, fans will undoubtedly be hoping their team can pull off the former feat, which will start the redevelopment plans at Elland Road.

Better facilities are only the beginning of Leeds’ larger goals, which include being regular competitors in the Premier League as well as winning promotion.

Redevelopment workers must be careful not to erase Elland Road’s rich heritage, as it is a highly renowned football stadium that many players aspire to play at.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will be furious as Charlie Crew news confirmed

Charlie Crew, another Leeds United midfield player heading off for international duty, will not be thrilled to see him go. Daniel Farke will not be pleased.

Awaiting his Whites debut, Crew has been added to the Wales Under-21s squad for this month’s matches against Slovakia and Czechia [FAW, 3 October].

Although the 18-year-old earned his senior debut for Wales at Elland Road, Farke would have rather that Crew would have remained at Thorp Arch, not having been called up to the senior team.

Unfortunately, Farke will only have access to Joe Rothwell, the starting midfielder, throughout the break due to his departure, Ao Tanaka’s selection for Japan, and the injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

Daniel Farke misses chance to utilise Charlie Crew at Leeds United

Before his team’s October 4 trip to Sunderland, Farke’s squad is even more depleted over the international break, as if he wasn’t already low on healthy and available midfield options.

The German will only be training with Rothwell for the next two weeks after being forced to play Tanaka and Rothwell as a double pivot for the bulk of their 1-1 draw with Norwich on October 1.

This eliminates any chance for Farke to build the new combination off the pitch, and it will be devastating if he can’t integrate Crew—the next cab off the rank at Thorp Arch—into that system.

Despite having just played 180 minutes of senior football since making his debut for the Welsh senior team in June, Crew appears to be increasing his role at Elland Road, if somewhat less so now that the two-week break has passed.

As he creates an unproven lineup in centre midfield, Farke’s resolve in the dugout will be put to the test over the next few weeks. All the indications are that Crew will be called into action sooner rather than later.
