Leeds United loan star admits ‘head was gone’ after ‘weird’ Preston North End match at Plymouth Argyle
A loanee from Leeds United scored in Preston’s 3–3 draw at Home Park.
Sam Greenwood of Preston North End was taken aback by Saturday’s 3–3 draw against Plymouth Argyle.
Paul Heckingbottom’s team took the lead at Home Park in the first half thanks to the Leeds United loan player’s fourth goal of the year. Both Brad Potts and Mads Frokjaer scored goals each side of the half to put Preston ahead by three goals at the half.
Over the second half, further possibilities presented themselves, but PNE chose not to seize them. And in the 92nd minute of the match, Morgan Whittaker made the most unlikely of comebacks for Argyle, who had spent most of the match looking down and out.
According to Greenwood, “It was a kick in the teeth,” “In this league, finishing games is crucial, even though we had some outstanding performances. As you can see from our performances, they are improving every week. We’ll continue to improve if we continue doing that.
Everyone, I believe, was frustrated, including the management. We performed so brilliantly that I lost my mind. They probably only had three or four opportunities in the second half.
It was a strange game, and we should now put it behind us. We acknowledge the point and proceed. At the end, I was also exhausted and devastated, but we’ll try again. We just need to keep getting better. Our performances show that we are more aggressive and have greater ball control.
Personally, though, I think North End’s number 20 is in a good spot. His first penalty kick of the Championship season came against Norwich City, and he made it two in two at Plymouth. Greenwood says he learnt a lot from his red card against Blackburn Rovers and is now hoping to start playing well.
“Definitely,” Greenwood replied. “I feel good, I’m focused, and it’s nice to have a few goals, so hopefully I can just keep it up now and maintain the consistency.” It is my responsibility to demonstrate my reliability to the manager. He will be able to trust me if I perform effectively.
“Especially after one of those things, being sent off.” For me personally, it was just a steep learning curve, and I probably shouldn’t have taken that risk. However, I believe I simply lunged a little too much since I press so aggressively and I really want to win the ball.
“It has taught me a valuable lesson, and I must now continue. Since I was a small child, I have always had that, and I have always enjoyed pressing. I am aware that many people dislike that aspect of the game since it involves a lot of running, but I truly enjoy it—working hard for the team and generally being a good team player.
