The 2024–25 season has been extremely challenging for Coventry City thus far, and few could have anticipated the problems they have faced in the first four months of the season.

Draws against Sheffield United and Sunderland have demonstrated that the Sky Blues, who are currently in the bottom half of the table, have more than enough ability to go up the league after a minor improvement in recent weeks.

But after more than seven years in charge, Mark Robins was fired after the Sky Blues’ 2-1 loss to Derby County prior to the international break, and there is still a lot of resentment at the CBS Arena.

He led the team from League Two to the Championship play-off final during his second stint at the club, which lasted 54 years.

Ben Sheaf named as Coventry’s main man

This current Sky Blues team has a lot of strength, but they are currently doing noticeably poorly.

As in the previous seasons, they were supposed to be competing for a play-off spot, and their present dismal standing has greatly irritated fans.

However, Coventry fan pundit Ryan Murphy has been questioned by Football League World about who he thinks is the team’s top player right now and why they are outperforming their teammates.

Ryan told FLW: “Ben Sheaf is without a doubt our finest player when healthy. He’s a class above everyone when he’s on it and completely fit.

“He dominates the game, sees passes that other players miss, recovers the ball, makes crucial interceptions, halts the opposition’s attack, and turns it into our attack.”

Ben Sheaf is without a doubt our finest player, and we miss him terribly when he isn’t playing for the squad. No one else can step in like that.

Ryan added: “He’s our finest player, in my opinion, and it would be a huge loss if we lost him due to injury.

“A number of clubs have been interested in him, but I believe his injury history deters him, so I believe it’s the only reason he’s still at the club.

“I think he could definitely play in the Premier League.”

Few can dispute Sheaf’s high calibre of performances this season, even though the rest of the team has had a dismal season.

Few players in the division are as composed with the ball in pressure-filled circumstances as he is for Coventry in the centre of the field.

He regularly maintains a firm grip in the centre, allowing more attacking players to pose a threat, and his height gives the Sky Blues the muscle they need to dominate in midfield.

Although his injury history makes one desire more, as Ryan said, there is no reason why he cannot play in the Premier League in the upcoming years, either with the Sky Blues or another team, if he can manage his fitness concerns.

It can be challenging to find consistency at this level, but Sheaf provides it in spades, and he has a very promising future ahead of him.
