‘Unbelievable’ – Wolves defender honestly wades in on Gary O’Neil sacking debate
Wolves’ feelings on Gary O’Neil’s departure have been made public by Matt Doherty.
The right-back for the Old Gold, Doherty, believes Wolverhampton Wanderers would be worse off without O’Neil as manager.
The Ireland international feels O’Neil is a “unbelievable” coach who deserves better, therefore he doesn’t understand why Wolves aren’t seeing results. Despite Wanderers being four points ahead of them in the relegation zone, Doherty believes that all of his colleagues share same viewpoint.
After losing 2-1 on the road against West Ham United, Doherty said Sky Sports, “He’s a great coach, unbelievable on the training pitch all week.”
“For whatever reason, it isn’t producing outcomes. I believe you could ask every player, and they wouldn’t have anything bad to say about him. For ourselves and our fans, we are disappointed. We’re sad for him, but there’s a lot of outside noise,” Doherty remarked.
There was much discussion prior to the West Ham trip that O’Neil would be fired if the team lost, but it appears like the head coach will stay in command for this Saturday’s match against Ipswich Town. The first of two consecutive relegation six-pointers will come when Wolves go to Leicester City, who have been revitalised.
Notwithstanding what Doherty and the other players may believe, if O’Neil fails to guide his squad to victories in those two games, the writing is most likely on the wall. Unfortunately, the management hasn’t exactly had the best cards, particularly in the transfer market, but in the end, it’s a results-driven business.
O’Neil made the following statement in anticipation of the Ipswich game: “I hope the supporters are still proud of what they see from the players because they want to win football matches and get out of the position we’re in.”
“They won’t despise it more than I do; whether they realise it or not, I’m right there with them right now. We will continue to strive and prepare for a crucial match against Ipswich.
